About the IBZ Erlangen

The Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) offers international guest researchers a comfortable temporary home. 49 furnished apartments are available in the four guesthouses.

  • The oldest guesthouse, built with funds from the Volkswagen Foundation in 1975, is located at Bergstraße 13 and was renovated in 2010 with funds from the German government's economic stimulus program. The complex with its garden lies at the foot of Erlangen's Burgberg. Every year from the Thursday before Whitsun, the Bergkirchweih, one of the most beautiful and most visited folk festivals in Germany, is celebrated there for twelve days.
  • The guesthouses at Erwin-Rommel-Strasse 61 and 63 were built in 1979 and 1985 with the support of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and were renovated in 2011 with funds from the same foundation to make them more energy-efficient and attractive. The outdoor facilities were also redesigned in 2012. The Faculty of Engineering, large parts of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the FAU sports grounds are within easy walking distance.
  • Inaugurated and opened in 1999, the guesthouse at Carl-Thiersch-Straße 5, the so-called UniKate, is located in a listed building, a gatehouse with a clock tower built in 1901. The building was purchased and lovingly renovated by Prof. Hans Wilhelm Schüßler and his wife, Prof. Helga Schüßler, and is an integral part of the Hans Wilhelm and Helga Schüßler Foundation. The Röthelheim Campus with facilities of various faculties, several shopping markets, restaurants and medical practices are located in the immediate vicinity.
  • Since 2020, international researchers at FAU have found a temporary home at the Villa Jordan guesthouse at the foot of Erlangen's Burgberg. The guesthouse has modern furnished apartments and rooms of various sizes between 17 and 47 square meters on the upper and top floors. One apartment is barrier-free and wheelchair-accessible, four have their own kitchen. On the first floor, there is a light-flooded common room, a common kitchen and a cozy lounge with a fireplace, which can be used as a meeting place for the residents of the house as well as for lectures or fireside chats. The outdoor area of the guesthouse, in which the old oak and pine trees have been integrated in the best possible way, also invites people to use it together.
