About the Leibnizhaus Hannover
With its richly decorated façade of 1651, the original Leibnizhaus used to be one of the most beautiful town houses in Germany. From 1698-1716, it was the home of philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716), one of the last universal scholars and polymaths in Europe. In his amazingly extensive correspondence, Leibniz had been in touch with the leading mathematicians, philosophers and natural scientists of his time.
After the complete destruction of the old town house during World War II, the baroque façade was reconstructed in 1983 on Holzmarkt Square in the centre of Hannover’s historical Old Town. The modern building complex was designed as Guest Residence for visiting scientists and has since been used by over 1800 guest researchers from more than 25 nations as well as Conference Centre and Meeting Point for science and research by Hannover’s Universities, Academies and Colleges.
A total of 36 apartments and guestrooms of various sizes are available to guest researchers. All flats are fully furnished and equipped with household appliances, towels, and bed-linen. Each flat / room has its own telephone extension and internet connection. Common facilities, such as TV-Room and Launderette, are at the residents’ disposal and free of charge.
The modern Leibnizhaus not only allows the Universities, Academies and Colleges in Hannover to accommodate visiting scientists and their families in attractive and lively surroundings; it also provides room for dialogue and discussion in the international conference centre for science and research. All conference rooms have internet access. Leibnizhaus provides a pleasant environment for academic conferences as well as cultural events.
